2009_11_panels.jpgRemember those neighbors in the Upper Haight who wanted a couple’s solar panels down, or moved out of sight, because they were a hazard to “safety”? It’s happening down in SoCal too, with homeowners associations denying people their “solar rights” — then themselves getting a little slap from the state’s Solar Rights Act of 1978, which makes it illegal to keep people from installing the panels unless they really are a safety hazard. Now a similar bill’s making its way through Congress. Says a solar installer: “”Some homeowners groups are just unaware (of the law). But they also like their control.” [LA Times, previously]

A couple things in curious combination: maxed out ornamentation with columns and chandeliers, and… the Tenderloin. Made us wonder for a second if this penthouse was once the temporary home of Yahoo millionaire G, who’s been know to have such fabulous design sense. But he was at a different address in the TL, which means there are more like him out there! This particular unit in the Hamilton at 631 O’Farrell has 3 beds, 3.5 baths, and 3,879 square feet and a pretty impressive solarium, if you can look past the way it’s decked out. On the 21st floor, it all might just be far enough from the ground to make it nice. Plus there’s Korean food downstairs. Asking price: $4,500,000.

San Antonio, at No. 2, is one of many Texas cities on the list. One reason is that the housing boom was muted in the state.Though Omaha, Neb., seems second-rate to some, Warren Buffett may have been on to something.

The motel room seemed to shrink as days wore on, and their belongings bulged from its one dresser and closet. Papers. Clothes. Hair accessories. Room 267 had become a cramped way station for a family of four, far from what Daverena White had in mind when she decided to buy a house.
